Restoring flow, recovering storage capacity, reducing a contamination risk and exposing steel for an inspector are four different jobs. The enquiry should explain whether the site needs restored flow, recovered capacity, reduced contamination risk or exposed steel, so the contractor can price the relevant surfaces and completion record.
Industrial silo cleaning should distinguish flow restoration from capacity recovery and inspection preparation. A contractor can then price the relevant wall, cone, outlet or fitting and state what evidence will be returned when that work is complete.
The first useful clue is the change operators actually saw: a slower discharge, a higher retained level or an alarm at the feeder. Then identify the material, because flour, grain, cement, feed ingredients, polymer pellets and chemical powders respond differently to storage, moisture and compression. Material that looks free-flowing at the discharge point can be hard higher up. The current and previous products, storage time, level readings and batch records help locate that change. Check which built-up areas can be reached
A roof hatch may give a clear view of one wall and no useful reach behind a probe, ring or baffle. Drawings and safe photographs should be used to match each opening with the built-up surface and the collection point below it, so the quotation can name any area that remains out of reach.
Choosing remote, dry or wet cleaning
Remote cleaning can keep people outside the vessel when existing openings give useful reach. Useful reach, visibility, deposit hardness and a controlled route for falling material determine whether it is suitable; the quotation should state any area the proposed equipment cannot reach. Where moisture would damage the product or process, a dry method may be more suitable. Scraping, brushing, controlled agitation or vacuum recovery still need to match the build-up, product data and any hazardous-area classification supplied by the site. Wet cleaning may shift some stubborn residues, but it is unsuitable where water reacts with the product, hardens the deposit or creates a liquid-recovery problem. A method used on another vessel is not evidence that it suits this silo.
Plan the fall and collection point before loosening the deposit
Once a compacted face is disturbed, far more material may move than the visible patch suggests. Agree where it can fall and how it will be collected before work starts. If the outlet or receiving equipment cannot take the full load, release must be staged. Material of uncertain identity stays separate until the operator decides whether to reuse, quarantine or remove it.
Where entry is proposed, it is planned as a separate exercise after the atmosphere, remaining material and isolations have been reviewed. Remote reach should be checked first.
Which surfaces are part of the clean?
Production, quality and engineering teams often mean different things by clean. A free discharge path is one result; exposed steel for an inspector is another. The site should name the required surfaces and acceptance check before the contractor opens the vessel.
Where cleaning precedes an inspection, the inspector’s list should name the surfaces, welds and fittings that need to be visible. Any visible corrosion, wear or liner damage belongs in a separate observation rather than being presented as a structural judgement.
The completion record should include photographs from identifiable viewpoints, treated areas, recovered material, inaccessible surfaces and the checks completed before filling and discharge systems returned to service. Any unverified surface should remain clearly marked.
Inspection findings and maintenance
When build-up keeps returning to the same spot, cleaning is treating a symptom. Compare photographs, level behaviour and recovered quantities across visits, then keep the findings in the planned maintenance history for that silo.

Confined-space and non-entry planning
A silo is not assumed safe to enter because it has stopped operating or looks empty from the outlet. HSE guidance treats silos as potential confined spaces and advises avoiding entry where the task can be completed another way. Openings, remote reach and material stability should be reviewed first.
The site controls isolation, permits, atmosphere testing and emergency arrangements. The contractor’s quotation should describe the cleaning work and known access limits without replacing those responsibilities.

How do you decide which cleaning method to use. From the product, the state of the build-up, the vessel shape, the internals, the access and what the finished condition has to support. The silo’s size or the product’s name alone never settles it. Does the job require anyone to enter the silo. Often not. Much of the cleaning work can be done through existing openings with people outside the vessel. Where entry is genuinely needed, it should be planned and controlled separately, with the limits of remote methods recorded. What changes the price of an industrial silo clean.
