Silo De-Bridging

Feeder noise can continue beneath material spanning the cone. Until the stored load is understood, nobody should treat an apparently clear outlet as proof that the space above is empty.

Report the level and discharge pattern from safe positions

Material can span the cone above an apparently empty outlet. Disturbing that support may release more product than the visible restriction suggests.

Infused Media receives the enquiry. The response identifies the independent cleaning contractor that will quote for and carry out any work you appoint.

Silo de-bridging needs a release plan as well as a way to disturb the supported material. The receiving equipment below must be able to contain the possible load, or the work has to proceed in controlled stages. Operators should also confirm the last reliable level, what the feeder did when flow stopped and whether any person or equipment on site could be exposed if the bridge releases suddenly.

A bridge may release suddenly. Isolate connected equipment, prevent access below the outlet and follow the site’s emergency and stored-material controls while the work is assessed.

Plan where released material can travel

Report the last reliable level, feeder behaviour and whether an empty space may sit below the bridge. Do not strike, probe or open equipment simply to improve the description. Control the release path first: The site isolates connected equipment and keeps people away from the outlet. The contractor then states how it will disturb and recover the supported mass. Its quotation should name the collection point for released material. Feeder behaviour gives another clue. Continued running with little change in the level above can indicate product spanning an empty space in the cone. Keep the outlet area controlled and compare the level and discharge records from approved positions to define the next controlled step.

People should stay away from the outlet and must not enter below uncertain stored material. The HSE’s brief guide to working safely in confined spaces specifically notes that silo blockages can sometimes be addressed with remotely operated equipment from outside.

Planning controlled silo de-bridging

The enquiry should include the vessel shape, material, estimated level, hatches, outlet and connected conveyors. The release path and collection capacity are agreed before the bridge is touched because a small break can free a larger quantity. Any remote tooling must also avoid probes, liners and internal fittings.

If the restriction is concentrated at discharge, compare silo blockage removal. The problem guide on material bridging in silos lists observations that help with the first review.

The volume that may fall is not limited to the material visible at an opening. Collection equipment, exclusion areas and discharge controls must allow for an uncertain load until level information and product movement show otherwise. No one should be positioned in the likely release path.

After supported material is removed, the site can observe the discharge route and record remaining wall build-up. If bridging returns, product condition, filling pattern or cone geometry may need a separate process review.

A running feeder with no fall in the level may indicate a supported mass above it; opening the outlet from below could expose the release path.

How can an apparently empty outlet still be dangerous. Material may be supported above a void. Disturbing it can release a much larger load without warning.

Why should people stay away from an apparently empty outlet. A bridge can support material above a void. Disturbing the outlet may release that stored mass into the discharge area without warning.
